Thanks all, for the welcome! Besides my vintage McSpadden that I've had over 50 years (strictly diatonic w/no extra frets), I just got a chromatic dulcimer last week that a 91 year old gentleman assembled for me from a kit. I expect to be playing it finger dance & and drone/picking style, too. Does anyone here else play a chromatic this way?
One reason I joined is that, lurking for awhile, I saw the Berea gathering that's coming up next year mentioned. I hope to be able to attend if my car can make the trip. The dulcimer players that I've met in my area all play in DAdd and all know the same songs which I (mostly) don't know. Even tuned to DAA to blend I can't keep up with them--I read music, but very slowly. I'm hopes of meeting some people that are at about the same skill level, and that like to experiment with different tunings.
Hi Ballad Girl, and welcome to the wonderful world of the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. It's a good place to come, spend some time, learn about the dulcimer, and to meet some good people.

Ballad Gal, Welcome to Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. So glad you joined. There are a number of noter drone players on this forum. Some play only noter drone and others play both chord melody and noter drone style. Those who play noter drone enjoy the history of the dulcimer and hope to keep alive the old traditional way of playing in addition to the more modern styles of playing the dulcimer. You mentioned wanting to attend a gathering of noter drone players. Sorry I don't know how to direct you more directly but the link below will bring you to a page on this forum with information of a planned gathering in Berea KY in May of 2019. A number of members here have already indicated an interest in attending this event. The members here represent a lot of experience and knowledge and I am sure any questions you post will be answered expertly. Best wishes on your continuing dulcimer journey.
