Its spruce. I got a letter from Jeffreys back in 1972 stating tops were spruce and backs and sides were laminated walnut or cherry. Here is a picture of the letter. I hope you can zoom on it and read it for yourself... Bob.
I know I'm coming very late to this discussion, but if you haven't already made a determination of what wood the top is made of, I'd suggest it's quartersawn Sitka spruce, or something similar. It doesn't look the right color to be butternut, IMHO. I've used spruce many times, and that's just how it looks.

I vote for spruce
I think it is spruce, but not high quality spruce. All of the Jeffreys' I have seen were spruce tops.

I agree John, it's not Butternut. Spruce,or maybe even Douglas fur.
