Cheryl, the " mother tree " is about 150 years old and the 4 smaller ones out back are very healthy. Must be the soil and livin in an area where the underground water is pruified through the limestone here in central Pa. I`ve had people come by my place and ask if they can have the nuts still in the husks so they can try and grow tree`s. Since it`s almost impossible to get enough meat from the nuts to make cookies....lol.
Cheryl; more precisely, unless I miss my guess they nuts from a Shagbark Hickory. Three are many cultivars of hickory. Bitter, white, Shagbark etc. Look at one of the larger trees and if the bark appears to be shedding away from the tree in long strips, loosed from the bottom, they are Shagbark. Bitter hickory nuts are smaller and have a very thin shell. The squirrels cut them firs because they mature first in the woods in the fall. The Shagbark (or 'shelly bark as us old timers know them) have the decicious, sweet nuts that are good in vanilla fudge ... you DO plan to make fudge ............ don't you . (address upon request) ..........
Thanks....I knew there would be tree gurus!!! Randy.....are your trees healthy?? Our two are big and seem to be surviving the canker without much trouble....hopefully they'll stay that way.
Dave....okay....I've seen the prickly ones before now that you say that....none on the ground right now, but lots of green ones up in the trees.
Rob....I have no idea what kinuchi is.....should I be skeered? :) Plus all the new nuts are green now....not sure when they are ready.
Thanks Mike....I think so too now that I've looked at a bunch of hickory nut pics. So many nut trees.....until I played dulcimer I didn't even think to pay attention to which nut goes with which tree. The two butternuts we have are easy to ID as they have the cankers on them. :( But I still am not sure what the nuts look like.
Hi Marg......Yep, hickory everywhere here as it turns out! Below is Randy's porch I believe....This is my porch:
Hickory, they are very hard to get in but squirrels don't seem to have any trouble.
Is that your porch, it is beautiful.
Randy, what a beautiful tree!!!!!!
