I hadn't heard this song. I think it's a great one to add to anyone's dulcimer play list. Though intricate in presenting them, I love the simplicity of the song when played. It's good traditional music. Love what you are doing.
I'm happy to see you have taken up the pastime of deciphering these old time fiddle tunes Cheryl. It has given me many many hrs of enjoyment. It is hard!...so hard in fact that most people when they try it think they can't do it. But it gets easier and easier. You are off to a great start. Always like to talk about the tunes and help in any way.
So fun trying to pick out the old fiddle tunes....a lot of work but very rewarding. BTW..the original recording is conveniently in the key of D (fiddle tuned GDAE). I'm tuned 1-5-5 close to DAA
Very good, Cheryl. Even if you don't have it exact (and I wouldn't know having never heard it before) it sounds good. Oh, and Audacity (a free, downloadable, multitrack recording software) has a slow down w/o changing pitch option as well as slow down and change the pitch.
Don Pedi also has a version of this, and its attributed to Fiddlin Bill, it sounds very different that the original recording. I'm trying to get the original tune down literally the way it was played without making too many edits. This tune is really way above my abilities on the dulcimer, but I will develop it over time. Thought I'd share this first step with ya'll. BTW: I use an app called SoundPitch to import the Mp3 and slow it down without changing its pitch. Great little app for learning tunes!
Cheryl, sounds like you got it all figured out. This is lovely. Thanks for sharing

Here's another version of the fiddle tune. This one is also attributed to Fiddlin Bill Hensley via Bruce Green. Its different, but close enough http://www.stringband.mossyroof.com/HoppinJohn.mp3

I'd say that's going pretty well for you!
