That's just the bad camera angle / distortion. The top is exactly as long as the fretboard, as can be seen here:
I think I've got it figured out. It's the angle that the side view is taken from that causes the fret board to seem smaller. By the way, I really like your sound hole pattern.
Nice looking box instrument, Peter. I'm confused by the photos though. The side view shows the fret board not coming to the end of the box on either side, but the top view shows the box equal in length with the fret board.
