Sarah, thanks so much....look forward to hearing you play.
Ken.....Michaels is way closer than any lake...I think I'll start there. I live up in the mountains so have seen lots of ducks but not too many geese. We do have wild turkeys though...will take a hike through the woods where I hear them bed down at night. There is also a peacock that lives on the mountain facing me...wonder if those would work?? :)
Patty, I am using a 2010 Macbook Pro and iMovie with a Yeti (Blue Microphone Co)...straight up no mixing of any sort. I aim the mic at the bottom right sound hole and use the stereo directional setting on the mic. Works pretty well! I would like a more portable mic or digital HD recorder at some point as I think it would be fun to record outside or to record jam sessions.
Thanks John, I believe Warren May has it figured out....although a few frets are not quite in tune by my electronic tuner(s).
Sam, I responded to your friend request....funny as I sent you one last night via iPhone but it must not have gone through. Ah well...the joys of technology.
Cheryl I've sent a 'friend' request. If you want to approve it, we can discuss getting some goose quills to you. Can't PM you till then. I have several and have offered them to anyone here. I would be happy to send you some.
Sam....would love to try a goose quill. I just haven't as I have no idea where to get one. I like the sound they make on the strings....again with the old timey sound....starting to see a pattern here!
Rob, I had no idea! I just like the old time sound, but didn't know that the spacing was also traditional. Yes, could work at fingerpicking it, but it just calls for a pick...or a quill if I had one! :) The deep drone sound/vibrations on this instrument is soooo very nice in person...can't really pick that up so well with my mic.
Very traditional spacing. My 3 string John D Tignor has the melody string separated from the middle & bass as well. You can do it, but you certainly have to work at it.
Thanks to both of you. I did fingerpick it a little but but two things make it tough. First, the action is super duper low...makes fingerpicking a little hard on the right hand to hit the string without scraping the fingerboard. And second, the middle and bass string are close together with a bigger space between the middle and upper two melody notes. I think its meant for strumming......a bit awkward to fingerpick. I'm liking the McSpadden a lot for fingerpicking with the new strings.
Nice sound on that May. Very "traditional," I'd call it. Of course, it may have been your traditional playing that makes it seems it. when you fingerpick something on it we'll know for sure, eh?
One of my favorite tunes, the dulcimer sounds great!
Cheryl ... 7:15 P.M. Friday ... just got the request

That is one great sounding dulcimer!

Cheryl, sounds great What are you using to record your videos? Your recordings sound very clear almost like studio quality if I can use that phrase.
Goose quills can be found at Michaels and JoAnne Fabrics and similar Craqft shops as well as a lakeshore near you...

Cheryl ... you sure put some zip into that one. One of the best versions I've heard. And I have goose quills for free if you want to try them.
