Cheryl, as I said on my other post I do like both but if you made me choose I would choose this one and it's because of my personal preference in sound. I love your playing. Thanks for sharing
Cheryl, Rosin the Beau played in chord/melody style sounds more pleasing to my ear on the MMD than on the BL. Reason: the BL has a brighter sound. If you were to change the style of play, say, to noter/drone I might have a different opinion.
I love it that my dulcimers have different sounds! When wanting to pair a dulcimer with one of Mark's guitars, I've got a stable of instruments from which to choose.
Thanks Kevin. The Blue Lion definitely sounds more traditional to me compared with the MMD. The MMD to me is more guitar-like. I'm glad you liked the Blue Lion. In person it sounds better than through my microphone too. I'm going to make a recording of it played noter drone....its really surprisingly nice played that way!
Cheryl , the MMD sounds great it just seems to have more bass response, and afuller sound. Maybe a little muddy. My dulcimers are modled after traditional early dulcimers, I just like that sound, the Blue Lion has more of the traditional sound I prefer. The Blue Lion is my choice of the two. They both sound great when you play them.
Thanks Dana! I have been having trouble deciding if I love my MMD or not. Sometimes it sounds heavy and boomy(muddy?) to me and other times it sounds lovely. Maybe its just different dulcimers for different days/moods?? Or varying humidity?
I love my MMD and yours sounds beautiful to. I'm MM all the way.

David McKinney would be so happy to hear that!! It's hard to beat that big body and resonator back for full sound! I hope that the BL will open up some over time. I don't think it's been played much.
Cheryl, like you, I tried very hard to be objective. I bounced back and forth. Just the luck of the draw, I saw and listened to the Blue Lion vid first (and was duly impressed) but as soon as you started playing the MMD I just liked it better. Still do. There will, undoubtedly be others that will prefer the Blue Lion. Both are fine, both sound great ... I just prefer the MMD. Even a different song might sway the way I feel. Do Sourwood Mountain on both. I BET you'll like the Blue Lion better on it.
Just to clarify, both instruments have identical fresh string sets. They are (my fav!) riverlark strings purple label .12, .14, .24
Sam...I'm trying not to like the MMD better :) But when I close my eyes and listen to the play backs it does have a fuller sound. Perhaps not fair of me to compare them side by each??
I prefer the sound of the MMD. That's not to take any thing away from the Blue Lion. Just personal preference. Both sound good and you know of course that you could change string diameter on either and change the sound significantly (not that that's needed). And of course another very nice example of your ability. Much enjoyed!
They are very different sounds for sure....definitely the MMD sounds deeper as it has a much bigger body. The Blue Lion , I think, is a little more balanced in its sound. I think the rosewood gives it a very nice balance. I have been trying to decide which of my dulcimers sounds the best, but its like trying to pick your favorite child...its nearly impossible. They are all so different and enjoyable in their own ways.
Hey Cheryl. I didn't listen to the other one, but this one sounds great to me. I wish mine had that wonderful deep sound
