The Whole world round on mountain dulcimer. Well I said I might have come up with the tune but when I went back and listened to the Dillard play it, it sound...
Thanks John, I wasn't sure if I was singing in the same key or not. I have a low voice and have trouble singing with my dulcimer. I'll have to try again.
I really enjoyed your singing and your playing, Dana. And you were singing in the same key as you later played it! It may not have felt like it because you were singing in a low-ish register, and then the sound of the dulcimer after that is bright, giving the effect of a higher key - but it's actually the same key.
I agree with JohnH that the melody of the song is pretty much a straight "Shady Grove". The words were written by Mitch Jayne (of the Dillards) and J Stuart. I've liked the song for a long time, having first heard a great version of it on the "More Music from Mud Acres" LP by the Woodstock Mountain Revue (from 1977). I'm off to play the record again - it's too long since I listened to it!
Dusty I'm going to try the DAC I was DAD capoed on the 1st fret when I was playing this. I like shady grove in DAC. And thanks again for the compliment.
I have to agree with John and John. It's like your voice was born to sing this song. You sound really good.
For the dulcimer, you mightplaying either in DAC or with a capo at the first fret and see what happens. Your dulcimer version doesn't capture that minor, haunting sound of your voice. It's very good playing, but it has a different feel than the vocal version.
Yes, I too love to hear you sing Dana, more please ! As for 'Shady Grove', (and it could just be my old ears), but I could hear that tune in your singing , but not in your playing ?
OH and the dulcimer is the yard sale special i bought remember, it was made by Allen Wood I found out Butch Ross has a Allen Wood he is the only person I could find that had heard of him.
Thanks everyone for the comments on my singing. I love to try and sing, sometimes it works sometimes it don't. LOL Patty next time I'll try and get my head in only thing is I don't have a bag:) HAHA

Thank you John, I love singing the old trad songs.
I like it! I hope you find a key where you can sing it while you play. Your voice is really suited for the song!
Thank you for the wonderful comment John Henry. I'm so flattered, I'll see what I can do.

This tune is almost identical to Clinch mountain backstep! Just heard it on youtube
The tab didn't paste the way I wrote it. If you cant figure it out I'll try something else. If you want the rest of the lyrics you can google them.:)
The Whole World Round
I heard the neighbors rooster crow early in the day
0 0 0 0 0 4 3 0 0 0 3 4 5
I heard his axe beyond the hill, and now Im bound away
5 8 7 5 5 4 3 0 0 0 4 3 0
For some men love the city life, some men crave the town
0 0 0 0 5 4 30 0 0 3 4 5
But Ill be bound for the lonesome woods, where I can settle down, I can settle down
5 8 7 5 5 5 5 4 3 0 0 0 0 4 3 0 0 3 4
Chorus:
Fiddle and a bow and the fire light glow, you can hear that lonesome sound
0 0 0 0 0 0 0 5 4 0 0 0 0 0 3 4 5
Ill leave behind my troubled mind, and go the whole world round, go the whole world round
5 8 7 5 5 5 4 3 0 0 0 0 4 3 0 0 0 3 4 5
DAD capo 1st fret Em
