Leo that is a great point that I never thought about! I can't think of any other instrument with the same variety of designs that dulcimers have. The general concept of "fingerboard laying on a box" has an almost unlimited potential.
The creativity and variation in instrument design and details among mountain dulcimer builders is arguably the broadest of any luthier types.
That's not a knock on other instrument building traditions, either! Those instruments have been around longer and have 'settled' on certain common designs. I suspect there was more variation in many of them in their earliest decades of existence.
Will the mountain dulcimer eventually become standardized to a couple basic designs and most popular sound holes...??? LOLOLOLOLOLOL!! Can't imagine it!! Never!!
