Home on the range (Mountain dulcimer - fingerpicking)

musician/member name:
Duration: 00:03:49
description:
State song of Kansas. This is my own arrangement of the song from 1873. You can compare how it sounds on a standard McSpadden Dulcimer 4FHWW (walnut body, ebony fretboard) in DAdd, and on a McSpadden Ginger 4FGWW in GDgg (walnut body, ebony fretboard). Video recorded with a Flip HD cam, audio recorded with a Zoom H2, no effects except normalization. Hope both is still in sync after the upload to Youtube. I use a possum board for both instruments.

Thank you all for taking the time to listen and comment - even though I am not here regularly (and though I'm a bit lazy about commenting on other videos as English is a foreign language to me).
My cheap Hora dulcimer did a got job to lure me into the dulcimer world. But of course the sound and sustain of the McSpadden dulcimers is far and away superior to that. Have a nice Sunday! :)

Goschi, I like both. The sound is wonderful. It would be interesting if you could put them both together...playing at the same time with the help of software of course.

Your arrangement is really nicely put together. Both instruments sound great, so I'd say your purchases will serve you well! Smile.gif

Great video Goschi! So great to be able to hear them side by side. That ginger sure has a nice clean ring to it and deep round tones to the standard. Also enjoyed the arrangement and your lovely playing! What a treat!Cheryl

Okay, so here is a recording of my new dulcimers, a McSpadden hourglass model and a McSpadden ginger. Both have the same specifications (walnut body, ebony fretboard), the difference between both models of course the size and VSL, the shape of the headstock and the different method of string fixation (Ginger: pins for ball end AND loop end strings; standard: nails for loop end strings).

I recorded the song "Home on the range" (should be in the public domain), the state song of Kansas. I remember we sang it already more than thirty years ago at the campfire.

I chose this song for this recording, because the same song is played in the "American Profile" video presenting the "Dulcimer Shoppe":

I play two verses with the hourglass standard sized model (it has a bridge compensation for DAD tuning) and then the same arrangement (well, at least almost the same arrangement, as I just play it by heart) with the Ginger in GDG. I recorded it at a stretch and cut out the change of instruments afterwards. So both instruments are played in exactly the same setting. I recorded the video with a Flip HD cam this time, the sound is recorded with a Zoom H2. I did edit the audio in any way and I did not add any sound effects except normalization.

I thought it may be interesting to have a direct comparison between the sound of both instruments (but don't forget: sound samples via youtube depend on very many factors: recording equipment and room; data formats and codecs; the speakers you use with your computer etc.).

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. It's a beautiful song, and the only video recording of it on this board so far seems to be Dusty Turtles great version:
