"The Rain Inside my Heart": improv JD-Xi & NA Flute

musician/member name: Music
Duration: 00:05:17
description:
I began another journey that I hope I will be on for a long time. I fell in love with the sound of the Native American Flute. I feel it will be a good companion to my dulcimer and guitar playing and writing.
I started on April 13, 2016 when the flute (Jonah Thompson) came in the mail along with a book by the late John Vames called "Understanding the Journey". This is an amazing book to have and gave me such a good start. I then took a class last weekend with Marsha Harris at the Pocono Dulcimer Festival. She was very inspiring and I've watched many you tube videos by Odell Borg.
I have learned a lot and have a lot to learn. This video is an improvisation as I wanted to just see where the music would take me. It's not perfect as I am learning how to play but I wanted to share my journey. I used my Roland JD-Xi and my iPhone to shoot the video. I used Logic Pro -X for reverb only. Thank you for watching. As always my 90 year old dad's selfie stick holder was used to hold my iPhone.

Louis JP Stivali:

I have a Jonah Thompson A minor flute as well which I also love to play and listen to...play dulcimer for our local Hospice as well as our local hospital, Senior Center, memorial services at the passing of our hospice patients, bereavement visits, and for out local health care facility, all on a volunteer basis...it is my passion to do so...both instruments are perfectly ideal for my venues...

That is so great Louis~ what a wonderful thing you are doing. My mom was in hospice for 6 weeks at the beginning of 2015. She passed on Valentines' Day that year and Hospice was truly a Godsend especially the nurses and volunteers. I used to play her the guitar and mandolin but I wish I knew about the dulcimer then. I think it would have been more soothing....I know she hears me now!!

Creative arrangement !!  Marsha, whom I've known for several years, is a great multi-talented instructor, so I'm sure you learned some great NAF techniques.  How did you enjoy the Pocono Fest ?

Hey Marc!! Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, I LOVED the Pocono Fest. I had 4 classes: One with Lois Hornbostel, One with EhuKai Teves, another with Nina Zanetti and lastly the flute class with Marsha. I learned LOTS from all 4. So now I have 2 festivals under my belt!!! I'd go to all of them but I have to pick and choose so that I can "spread" myself around...** gotta have a balance with family work and dulcimer lol!!

Thanks again

Maria

and hope you have been well!!

The combination of sounds you produce with your synthesizer supports the flute well.  A haunting, but beautiful song!

Thanks so much I really appreciate it. I'm glad that you enjoyed it!!

This is going to be verrrry interesting.

Thanks so much Terry!! I'm so very glad that you like my music!! I'm just loving my new discoveries (the dulcimer and the NAFlute ) I hardly play my guitar any more lol!! I won't give it up but it's not capturing my attention the way these other instruments have. Yes, it's going to be a fun journey!

Very nice! I love the sound of your flute. It is such a relaxing instrument to play. I have a bunch of them lol. If you have any flute circles near you you should attend. You can learn fast when listening to others and playing and getting their feed back. Keep up the journy, you're well on your way.

OH Caleb!! That's so nice of you to say. It was just like the dulcimer in that I knew right away that I was going to LOVE it. and I do!! I will have to look for the circle. time is tough but you never know...thanks again

I don't use a dulcimer in this video. BUT the dulcimer led me to the Native American Flute.

This is an improv I did today using it and my synthesizer.

I was inspired by the workshop I took this weekend in the Poconos with Marsha Harris as well as a book I'm using called
"Understanding the Gift" by John Vames. I also watched some of Odell Borg's Videos!

I have a long way to go but I really am enjoying it and hope to use it in conjunction with my dulcimer!

Thanks for watching!
