Sue / Strumelia - thank you for your interest in my British dulcimerthe back and sides are mahogany and the top/deck is a type of spruceoriginally it had a sunburst look, but I had it re-finished a couple of years ago and it is now finished in gun-oil - it looks and sounds greatit is extremely light by the way, about 1/4 or less what you might expectthe design is tapered - it is deeper at the bridge end - this general design was pioneered by British guitat maker / luthier Stephan Sobel - his wife Liz plays MD so he made some appalachian dulcimers - unfortunately I heard that he no longer took orders for dulcimers so another British maker / luthier: Martin cole made this for me - Martin lives and works in Cornwall - this is Martin's web page and shows haw the instrument looked originally http://www.martincoleguitars.co.uk/othinstr.htm
