Jamie, this does have the feel of an old hymn, like I heard/sang when young, too. My mom became a church pianist when she was about sixteen and was still church pianist when I was sixteen-- I heard lots of old hymns!
Love this song but it also makes me smile.It sounds so much like the old folks singing hymns in the Methodist church of my youth.
What youre saying about characters coming to life through their songs, i find especially true with maritime ballads. The melodies and very straightforward lyrics have so much personality.

Characters in old ballads (and their offshoots) do take on lives in our minds.
Thanks Robin.There are a lot of fair young maids and brisk young sailors out there.The sailors are often called John Reilly.Like a lot of maritime/NL variants of old songs this version whittles things down to the bare essentials.Sing the song long enough and the characters come alive like old friends.
