Thank you, Robin!

Yes, I have started to collect German folk songs that work well with the dulcimer.

Most folk songs still popular in Germany are from the late 18th and the 19th century - but there are also some "really" old songs.

Many of them start with the fourth under the keynote - so I really should try to get more familiar with the DAA tuning now, so I can actually play the tune on the melody string when strumming ...Smile.gif

That was wonderful Peter Smile.gif

I hope we hear some more German folk songs as I expect they will fit the instrument really well. After all, they were most probably being played on the hummel long before the Appalachian dulcimer emerged in the New World.

Thank you all for listening and for your comments! :D

@Patty: Well that was my first recording of me singing and playing the dulcimer at the same time. But yes - I should do that with other songs too.

Apart from learning to know American songs for dulcimer, I also try to play some German folk songs as well. There are some that can be easily played with the dulcimer.

This is not a folk song that I have heard before and I loved it. I'm sure my elementary kiddos would love it as well. Great job Peter. Keep them coming.

A funny German children's song. Music by Carl Friedrich Zelter (1810), lyrics by Hoffman von Fallersleben (1835).

As I didn't know whether there is an English version of the song, I tried to translate it in English myself. Thanks to Carrie Barnes who helped me with the translation!

I tried to stick close to the German lyrics, but in a way that you can actually sing it in English.

The cuckoo and the donkey,
each other they did sting:
"Who is the better singer,
who is the better singer
on this sunny day in spring,
on this sunny day in spring?"

The cuckoo said: "Just listen!"
and lively raised his voice.
"I'm better!" screamed the donkey,
"I'm better!" screamed the donkey,
and chimed in with the noise,
and chimed in with the noise.

Oh what a jolly singing,
oh what a screech and caw!
A duet of two masters,
a duet of two masters:
cuckoo, cuckoo, hee-haw,
cuckoo, cuckoo, hee-haw!
