Hi Ken. I knew it had something to do with morphine but I didn't know how it was administeredMy introduction to the tune didn't have the traditional lyrics but told the same storyI've seen a few versions of the lyrics on the Internet.not sure if there's a correct versionI bet those field hospitals must have been grim places back thenI'm not up to singing and playing yet and if you'd have heard me sing you'd be glad I'm not!
Great playing, Steve! I do it as a song, the words are interesting. Did you know "Soldier's Joy" was a term for a mixture of beer, whiskey, and morphine that soldiers used during the Civil War to kill the pain of battle wounds.

Thanks John and yes Rob it was on the Arkansas Traveler CD which I still listen to regularlyI'd never heard SOldiers Joy,Cripple Creek or Arkansas Traveler until that album came out 10-12 years ago
I believe that's on Michele Shocked's cd "Arkansas Traveler." That album was my introduction to her music. You've done a fine job with that tune (one of my favorites, too.) Keep up the good work.
