Thank you Goschi, Nila, Dave and Karen (i hope i didn't miss anyone). Karen....I had no idea how to do it but that felt the most natural and controlled way to do it. At first I was using my thumb as I do on guitar and I didn't like it on dulcimer.
Vivian, I always keep nails on my right hand (none on the left so I'm lopsided!) for playing my classical (nylon strings). I do sometimes use fingerpicks on steel string guitar (to save my nails) but it is harder rather than easier for me. I ordered some Alaska pics for the dulcimer as that is what Steve Smith showed me at the WNC dulcimer collective ... I'll report back once they're here and I've given them a whirl.
Well, that makes me feel better...I was thinking I must be hopeless if that was your first attempt at fingerpicking ...ever! I miss the strings more than I hit them! I still haven't tried fingerpicks..does that help or make it worse? In any case you did a great job.

Thanks Vivian! Yes guitar since childhood and formal classical guitar study for five years. It feels similar to guitar for me, just positioned differently.....and entirely different tuning, of course. I still miss strings or fret early etc....it's has taken years for me to coordinate all that and endless hours of practice. Unfortunately the music comes easy for me in my head, but the coordination of playing a stringed instrument with both hands doing different things took a long time. So hang in there!!!
Wow! I am sooo IMPRESSED! That is your first attempt at fingerpicking? My first attempts look a lot different than that! Do you have experience on any other stringed instruments? I must be very uncoordinated! I can't seem to "pick" the string that I need to get the melody at the right time...I'm always off picking some other string, so it doesn't sound like anything at all... Anyway, what a great job you did...thanks for sharing!
Outstanding, Cheryl. It's hard to believe you got such bold and clear sounds on your first try at fingerpicking. It's so nice I played it twice!

Hi Phil,Yes, I went for the first time this past Sunday. Everyone was great and very helpful...and patient thankfully! Hope to see you there. Will probably go to Dulcimer U. I have a new part time job and I'm not sure of my schedule yet, but hopefully I'll be able to work it out.Looking forward to meeting you IRL!
Hi Cheryl, did you go to the Folk Art Center Sunday? I have been there many times in the past. Steve Smith is awesome! I learned a whole bunch from him over the past few years. Hope to meet you in person in the near future. Have you checked in to Dulcimer U in Cullowhee. I will be there. Nice fingerpicking!
Cheryl ! I used to be able to recite a long poem about 'firewood' which contained a line "and Ash for a Queen" Your playing of Ash grove sounded very regal ! Thanks for posting

Jennifer...yes err...soothing is what I meant!! :)Dusty, I'm not so sure about a future...fingerpicking is hard! I was surprised that it was as difficult as it was!! But it was enjoyable....
So pretty ...
So sweet, especially with the kitty sleepin next to ya
Very, very pretty.
That's amazing Cheryl - such beautiful musicality. You make the instrument sound so pure and simple, yet absolutely precise

Great job on the finger picking. I'm glad to see someone else using index, middle, and ring. That makes me feel better. Very nice.

Wayne, you may be right.....he runs away when I start strumming fiddle tunes! Must be a finger style kitty. :)
Thank you everyone for the kind comments. I have a whole new respect for those of you who fingerpick (finger style??)
