Description:
learned it from a 1966 recording by Reg Hill,'Ottawa Valley Hoedown #2"...The fiddle is tuned A,E,A,C#.The dulcimer is AAAA,the guitar standard tuning..the overtones on the dulcimer are hit and miss...an amplifier, pickup and volume pedal would work wonders...
Love this!
It's also great to hear the back story of your Galax dulcimer.
I love unison A tuning-- I have an instrument in Bagpipe tuning (Aaaa).
How much joy have I gotten out of the aaaa tuning?A lot! I ordered a giant Galax dulcimer from John Knopf a couple years back thinking "Galax" just means a false back to increase the volume. He sends me this monster with the extra back with equidistant strings all tuned to one note. I've learned to love it.A very happy misunderstanding.
Thanks for the positive comments.I've also known the tune as "Devil's Waltz" and "Dead Man's Waltz"...there are a lot of stories re playing the fiddle in that tuning. The tune is definitely a version of the Rye Whisky song also.
Nicely played, Jamie. This sounds a lot like a tune known in the Appalachians by different names (I think) including Drunken Hiccups.
Good tune Jamie! Worth learning I think.
