Margaret MacArthur used to sing a New Hampshire version. The song is pretty widespread with versions throughout the eastern US and England and Ireland. It's been recorded by such luminaries as Pentangle and Bert Jansch
Ok this just blew me away. I love love love it. I'm going to look into maybe singing this ballad if i can. You did a beautiful job. It's a wonderful tale, and though the melody is not unknown for ballads, it is powerful and magical and matches perfectly with the story.
Thank you for being such an inspiration! (always always)
Thanks all for the positive comments.Dusty-I can see the "werefox" notion, nevertheless I see Reynardine as more of a vampire-Svengali figure..a bit closer to "human" than a werewolf.A friend of mine often comes back from visiting Finland with gorgeous fabrics...one of them features foxes standing on hind legs like humans.I think it's a sub-conscious thing with Europeans, whereas wolves are seen as more malevolent.
Hi Mark, thanks for the link,I really enjoyed Margaret MacArthur's version.Amazing, the story stays the same but the details get changed.

Beautiful sound Jamie! A lovely sinister feel to it!
I neglected to say: the D a dd dulcimer is capoed at the 4th. fret...it gives you what I call the "Sweet Home Alabama" chords,A,G,D.

You create a great atmosphere with this song Jamie. Much enjoyed it!
Great rendition of great old ballad.
Your voice and play work just right with an old ballad, Jamie.
I believe a reynardine is a werefox. We hear a lot about werewolves, but less about werefoxes.
Nice job with this old ballad! I'm sure there's a category of ballads that center on warning women about the dangers of strange men.
