Thanks, Lorri. Some songs takes weeks to get, but this simple version of Bonaparte's Retreat was a quick learn. I hope to find more like it to beef up my repertoire.

Wow, thanks, folkfan, your compliments mean a lot to me. Doc Watson is a blind guitar player from North Carolina who first started playing in the 1950s. He must be in his late 80s by now. He plays a variety of styles, from fingerpicking blues and ragtime to flatpicking fiddle tunes in an old timey and bluegrass style. He also sings and is a genuine catalogue of folk music. Merle was his son and a fine guitarist and slide guitarist in his own right, but he died some years ago, I believe in a tractor accident. Doc still tours, though not as much as he used to, and I strongly urge you to see him if you get the opportunity. You might also do a search on YouTube, for lots of his stuff can be found there. You might give Deep River Blues, Black Mountain Rag, Shady Grove and Salt Creek a listen, but you really can't go wrong with any Doc tune. Doc Watson is a gentle soul and a true American treasure; I'm sure if you just heard him sing and play a bit you'll realize you found a kindred spirit.

Really enjoyed your playing. Makes me wish I could play like that. But at least I can listen and enjoy your efforts. Have to admit I don't know who Doc or Merle are or were, but they obviously had a good effect on you and your playing. Smile.gif

Dusty, Although I've not listened to it in quite some time, it's neat listening to Doc talk with David Holt about his (Doc's) life on the Legacy cd set. David Holt also had a child die and Doc told David that he came to peace over Merle's death after he'd had a dream.

Thanks for your encouragement, Robin. It is a shame Merle died so young. He was doing some real interesting stuff with traditional music on the slide guitar.

Nice play, DT. Doc and Merle sure did play some great tunes together.

Thanks, fellas. I've added a few minor nuances since recording that, but I was amazed how quickly I picked up that song.
