Hi Strumelia, The tunings are geared to my singing voice. The Box Dulcimer is tuned D A D but with the Capo on the first fret it is now in Aeolian Eminor. This suits my singing range.
The Tear Drop is in F A G (Dorian) for this allows me to sing a D on the 11th fret. I may not have answered your question, but that is the reason I have them tuned this way.
I am curious to ask one question though- I see you apply a capo in order to play in aeolian mode... why then do you 'not' use a capo for playing in dorian mode (i'm assuming you are retuning to play dorian mode). If you retune to play in dorian, why then use a capo instead or retuning to play in aeolian?
Looks like a happy dulcimer family.

A lovely collection of dulcimers, John!
