Like an dulcimer petting zoo. Great job, Wally!
Thanks Wally. That is a valuable learning donation to the Center.
I didn't know you did this Wally. That's a great way to introduce folks to the mountain dulcimer. Thanks for letting us know about your gift and how it will be used.

"The dulcimer sings a sweet song."
The dulcimer collection in the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center was well worth studying, but as we saw it it was a "white gloves" exhibit. It presented dulcimers as objects from the past, and we know them as more than that.
The Jones Center is also more than a collection of rare artifacts, it also has replaceable items for hands-on learning, like the 1950's pin-ball machine in the lobby area, and folk toys and fabrics you can touch.
At the end of our visit I offered Chris Miller the gift of a contemporary Apple Creek instrument that could be used for demonstrations and "play."
They now have the instrument. It took me a while to put together some documents on getting started without a teacher.
Chris reports ".... we are going to hang it in the gallery lounge space where students linger between classes. It will have signage and a wall pocket for learning materials. We will invite students and other visitors to play and learn if they desire. We will ask them not to tune it. One of our students who is an accomplished old time and Bluegrass banjoist will be the one to keep it in tune. She works every weekday."
Way cool y'all got to see this collection-- I'd love to see these instruments!
P.S.- L. Allen Smith was an Ohio University alum. :)
