Mark Gilston plays a popular old time tune on mountain dulcimer. Angelina Baker was originally written in 1850 by Stephen Foster for the Christy Minstrels. It was a humorous lament for a slave woman who (presumably) had been sold away and left the singer broken hearted. Once it worked its way into the folk consciousness, the tune changed dramatically and became shortened, and the words were mostly forgotten or changed as new verses began to show up. The old time versions are barely recognizable as the original song.
