Deck the Halls

musician/member name: Mark Gilston
Duration: 00:01:38
Mark Gilston plays a traditional Welsh New Years / Christmas carol on mountain dulcimer.
The melody for Deck the Halls comes from a 16th century Welsh love song entitled "Nos Galan". The Welsh text for the carol in current use was written by Talhaiarn (John Jones) and published (in 1862) in a joint work with the Scottish composer and author, Thomas Oliphant, who in turn wrote an English text celebrating Yuletide libations. Oliphant's text was revised by puritan Americans in the 1870's, removing the drinking references and replacing them with more generic holiday attributes. This 1870's revision is the version most commonly sung today.
