"They all went swimming across the lake, Um Hmm, Um Hmm. They all went swimming across the lake and got swallowed up by a big black snake. Um Hmm, Um Hmm" - Burl Ives' version (Almeda Riddle sings a very similar ending verse as does Doc Watson.)

"Next to come in was Mrs. Cat.  All the children cried out 'Scat!' Frog was in a terrible fright. He up and said to them, 'Good Night'.  Let me tell you what Miss Mousie got.  She got swallowed on the spot.  Frog went a courting and he did ride.  Hi diddle diddle all the day."  - Pete Seeger's version (Pete sings several versions, but all end badly for the wedding party.)

And one of the best known English versions:

But while they were all a-merry-making, Hey ho! said Rowley, A cat and her kittens came tumbling in.

With a rowley, powley, gammon, and spinach, Hey ho! said Anthony Rowley.

The cat she seized the rat by the crown, The kittens they pulled the little mouse down.

This put Mr. Frog in a terrible fright, He took up his hat and he wished them 'Good night

But as Mr. Froggy was crossing the brook, A lily white ducky came to have a look,

So that was the end of one, two and three, the rat and the frog and the little mousie.

But while they were all a-merry-making

Hey ho! said Rowley,

A cat and her kittens came tumbling in.

With a rowley, powley, gammon, and spinach,

Hey ho! said Anthony Rowley.

The cat she seized the rat by the crown (Ah!)

Hey ho! said Rowley,

The kittens they pulled the little mouse down.

With a rowley, powley, gammon, and spinach,

Hey ho! said Anthony Rowley.

This put Mr. Frog in a terrible fright (Oh!)

Hey ho! said Rowley.

He took up his hat and he wished them (Good night!)

With a rowley, powley, gammon, and spinach,

Hey ho! said Anthony Rowley.

But as the Froggy was crossing the brook,

Hey ho! said Rowley.

A lily white ducky might have followed him home,

With a rowley, powley, gammon, and spinach,

Hey ho! said Anthony Rowley.

So that was the end of 1, 2, 3

Hey ho! said Rowley.

(The rat), (The mouse) and (Mr. Froggy!)

With a rowley, powley, gammon, and spinach,

Hey ho! said Anthony Rowley.

That's interesting- in my perusing of old sung ballads, I've only ever heard various 'happy' endings for this one.

I once had a flock of ducks and a pond, and the ducks would feast on frogs and tadpoles every Spring. I always felt kinda bad about that.

Well done Mark. jive

Thanks.  I love the "happy" ending.  No frog and mouse dinner for cat's, ducks and snakes in this one (:
