@john-c-knopf Yes, there you were playing your cool build of an Uncle Will Singleton style mountain dulcimer right there on the sidewalk!

Same to you, Robin!  You two make some fine music.  I'm glad we met way back in Berea at the Dulcimer Homecoming.

Yes, @dusty, canaries in the mines.

Ohio's worst mine disaster was in Millfield OH in November 1930-- Millfield is not too far away from us.  I'm going to post a link for a documentary made by Burr Beard (who is also a hammered dulcimer player).  About the 14:00 mark you will see canaries were also taken into the mine after the disaster during the process of recovery.

Robin, the birds offer more than a generic sense of hope. We know that canaries were once brought into the coal mines because their illness or death would indicate the presence of poisonous gases before the miners themselves would notice.  The mines are now abandoned.  The miners are gone.  The birds continue singing; they alone have survived.

@macaodha Val, as I think of the contrast with the tune title, the birdsong speaks of hope.  I'd forgotten we'd even made this recording with the window open to hear birdsong and came across it the other day.

We wish you and your dear ones good health, great joy, and lots of music-making in 2026!
