Abandoned 1928

Description:
We own a small bit of acreage here in the old coal mining region in the Appalachian foothills of Ohio. Though our house does not rest atop a deep mine, under our acreage is a portion of a deep mine. The name of the mine was Hemlock No. 20 and it seems the mine was abandoned in 1928. A portion of the hill on which we live is, very slowly, slipping, likely, due to the presence of the abandoned mine nearby.
The mountain dulcimer played is a Blue Lion. The drones are tuned to D (the wound bass is an octave lower than the unwound doubled drones) and the melody string is tuned to A.
The guitar is a Larrivée 000-40 in standard tuning.
@davisjames Jamie, you paint such a good picture with your description of where you used to walk. Abandoned places are mirages in that you can no longer see them yet they are in your mind's eye. Thank you for listening and for the description of an abandoned place you know.
Love this.The family farm was/is in "the land in between" where the Canadian shield meets the Laurentian lowlands.There are little patches of arable land amongst the rocks and the steep forested hills.Some miles back of the farm were three failed farms.We used to walk there by paths,old tracks.One place had an apple tree,another a rose bush.All of the homes just sank back into the earth,hardly a trace.Always wondered what happened to those people...Last time I was there the fields were gone and the forest had taken over.
@macaodha We're honored you like the tune! As I wrote to Dusty, if anyone would like to put lyrics to it and make it their own, they'd be welcomed to do so. There's a place in the B part where I think we're going to make a slight change (in which Mark will do a strum-through, slight rest, then come back in). Since we've been playing the tune for a few weeks we may re-record it. Many thanks for listening!
There is a song in that beautiful piece of music. Love it.
@dan, thank you for listening!
@dusty, plaintive tunes are my specialty.
Actually, this tune is hard for me to play just the way I'd like to play it. Some of the noter sounds I want to make are hard to get (I don't always get them!) because I'm sliding into the fret then doing a quick pull-off. Thanks for the nice comment! If anyone would like to put lyrics to it, they're welcome to do so.
Thank you folks!
What a charming melody! Less plaintive than many of your tunes. And both the dulcimer and guitar are precise and sensitive, as always. The melody cries out for lyrics, I think. Very nice.
