Here is my version of an old cowboy song of unknown origin that was published in 1908 in N. Howard Thorp's collection "Songs of the Cowboys". The "old maguey" is a lariat used for roping livestock. The "Sam Stack tree" refers to Bill's saddle possibly built by saddle maker Sam Stack or Sam Stagg. The rim fire in the last verse is an old term for a double cinched saddle.
