Blind Mary (Mountain Dulcimer)

musician/member name:
Duration: 00:02:42
description:
This is another favorite O'Carolan tune. I based how I play it on an arrangement for fretted dulcimer by Joemy Wilson.

Yes, I do tend to hold the dulcimer so that the left side dips down a bit, especially if I'm going to fret fairly high. It's makes it easier for me to be able to use a lighter touch on the fret board. Regarding the thumb for melody, I've been playing dulcimer like that for about 25 or so years now, so I suppose it's just a habit for me. It's the hand position that I prefer. I always do my best to try fret with the most "economy" of movement possible.

When you are doing your scales, try adding just two note chords in for a while and see if that helps.

You can't see it, but I have acoustic foam on the other walls.

Two questions about how you hold and play the dulcimer. Could be the angle in which the camera sees it all, but I think I see the left side of the dulcimer is much lower positioned then the right side. The right hand is above your right leg. Of course this is only possible when using a strap. I also like to play in that position, mainly because I have a too big belly, which makes reaching the frett board in the middle almost impossible... I place my left foot underneath the chair, which lowers the left knee a bit. Anyway, looking at your shirt you don't have a belly, so why did you choose playing a 'slope' dulcimer rather then a horizontal one?
The second question is the use of the thumb of the right hand. I also want to use it playing the melody, only being trained at the guitar my thumb is thinking bass, bass, bass! (or 1, 1, 1), special in arpreggio's. I play the bass guitar and double bass, but that is still thinking 'no melody'! Probably you right hand is used to the piano. I tried to study the melody only with my thumb, but as soon as the index and middle finger comes in, there is confussion. Any suggestions?

And a very important item in your recording situation is the book shelve behind you.Booksmostly make the room's acoustics better, but don't go to the library Smile.gif Clothing is mostly too much, like bed rooms.

And also, beautiful tune, beautiful played on a beautiful instrument.

well, Guy, no wonder you are teaching me all this stuff! Thank you again, so much, you are very kind and helpful, and of course, I adore you.

I usually do all my audio editing right in Garage band... it keeps the video synced. Then I export the video and open it in a program called Wondershare. Then I do my trimming (get rid of the bits at the beginning and end where I'm turning on and off the camera) and use the conversion program in wondershare to compress the file enough to make uploading to YouTube fast without losing my High Definition... That's my procedure anyway. Everyone has their own, I'm sure. I teach music, so I have a little studio set up where I do my recording.

Cynthia, I use a mixer and run the sound into my HD video camera.

Guy: Very basic question. What do you have the mic going into--do you use a preamp, mixer, into your computer via a software program, into recording set-up????? Thank you, again.

Thank you so much, Marc, Benjamin and Rob. I'm not using anything too fancy... I have a Sennheiser e-838 and the second mic is a Shure c-606 to pick up a bit of the sound coming from the top. I'll mic it up with 2 if I have the time, otherwise I just use the Sennheiser around the area of the sound hole.

Guy, beautifully played as usual. I had Joemy's 1st album where she played the Mt Dulcimer; it was a favorite of mine. That Aeolius sounds lovely. Now a technical question: what kind of mics are you using?
