We call them Spanish or Sweet Chestnuts over here Robin.Unfortunately they rarely ripen fully in England. It's grown quite a lot here, but mainly kept copiced for hop poles and palings. If they're allowed to grow they make a splendid tree, all that glossy foliage and deeply fissure trunk, very handsom.

Chinese chestnuts?!?Here, the Chinese chestnut trees have mostly shed their nuts & leaves. I need to gather those prickly husks from the ground-- got to wear good leather gloves to do the job!
