John, thanks for posting this. I think this is useful because it focuses on modes and excludes tuning. It is really hard to explain that modes are defined by the root position on the fret board (and the corresponding interval series) and not by a particular tuing. Well done.
John, I had success with the "pie" chart. The intervals chart had the edges cut off but that's okay. I saved that from the Ning site and I incorporated both on a Word document with your explanation. Thanks again!!! I'm determined to learn these modes.
Hi Patty, looks like the new site uses it's own viewer, and you can't just drag and drop like the old site. Best I can see at the moment is to go to my page and scroll down to the multi view. Then 'drag and drop' the image you want to your desktop. It's a low resolution copy, but being mostly lines and text it will scale up easilly once you have it on your computer. I'm guessing there must be an attachment thingy somewhere, but not found it yet.
You're quite right, it's all the info found on the Intervals chart, just a more simplified layout.
1) The Inner ring shows where the root note goes.
2) The outer ring interprets what other positions you can play from, given those gap(s) in the scale. e.g. a tune gapped at the 2nd and 6th can be played from the Dorian, Aeolian of Phrygian positions.
3) Tells you what alternative position you can use, given extra frets : 6+ one place clockwise, 1+ one place anti-clockwise. e.g. an Ionian tune can be played from the Mixalydian position with a 6+. an Aeolian tune can be played from the Dorian position with a 1+ etc.
John, I'm assuming this goes with the picture of the other chart? I wish I could print this out. I tried right clicking and doing a new tab, window, saving, etc and can't seem to download or print it. I would love to see a simple explanation of this chart. Thanks!!!
