That's good advice. It has to be easier than using a drill and various files I had on hand. I've been frustrated looking for the right tool. I wish they made a tiny hand held saw such as a fret saw( the other kind) with a veeeerrrry thin blade. I'm trying to build this dulcimer without any power tools.
The trickiest thing about these is that you need to get the blade stretched tightly, or it will break. After you install the blade, pluck it like a dulcimer string. It should ring with a high pitch. Ping Ping. Kind of like if you pluck a dulcimer string above the nut.

Thanks Bob, I'm making my second dulcimer and have been looking for a better tool to cut my sound holes with.....I will definitely look for one if these....
Lynn, I cut the sound holes using a fret saw, which is different, believe it or not, from a fretting saw which is used to cut the fret slots. Here's a picture of my fret saw. It has a very deep throat and uses super fine jewelers saw blades. The sound hole pattern was copied from a 1930s Gibson guitar and scaled to fit.
That dulcimer is looking good.
