Here is a simple and unadorned medley of "Mississippi Sawyer" and "Bonaparte's Retreat" played on an octave dulcimer made by David Beede and tuned DAd.
Thanks, Dana. Both songs work really well on these little dulcimers, and other than some really minor embelishments, I play a pretty barebones version of each
Bonaparte's Retreat has three parts and some versions do them in different orders. The part I start with and go to again in between the other two is usually the B part, but I first heard the song on an oldDoc Watson album and I play the song in the order he does.
John, David Beede sent this dulcimer to me with .008, .010, and .022. I see no reason to change that setup as the dulcimer sounds great to me. I do use a much lighter pick than I use with a standard dulcimer, though.
And for the record, I am so delighted any time my daughter shows any interest in music that she gets whatever instrument she wants.
Thanks, everyone, for your comments. I posted that little video just before heading to the airport for a two-day business trip, and it was nice to settle into my hotel room and see so many encouraging responses.
Wayne: I don't know if it's her final decision, but my daughter is leaning toward "Splash" as a name for this dulcimer. And yes, I have been playing it more than her since it arrived, but the plan is for her to learn playing on this dulcimer while I play one of my standard-sized instruments. I'm doing my best to think of it as her dulcimer rather than mine.
Ethan: The octave dulcimers David Beede makes have a VSL of about 16.5 inches. Over in the group "Little Dulcimers" I posted just the other day a list of small dulcimers and what their VSLs are. If you are curious, go have a look for yourself by clicking here .

That was GREAT I have got to learn that I love Both songs.
What a wonderful birthday present, Johnny! And I bet your playing picked up pace in the second half when LSU got going.

Great sound Dusty, what string gauges are on it?
(any truth in the rumour that your daughter has to arm wrassle with you for a chance to get to play it?)
John
Very nice, Dusty! (the playing, the dulcimer, and heck...even the shirt!) ;)
That was wonderful Dusty! She really does have a fantastic voice, now I want one!
Thanks, John. The dulcimer really does have a special tone. I hope my playing doesn't get inthe way.
Nice job! That dulcimer sounds great as well!

Great sounding instrument. What is the VSL ?
You have a really good sound quality. Very inspiring.
Good stuff!!
That's really tiny, and a nice tiny sound, too. Very nice.
