Carry on baggage/dulcimer and ND related

OFF TOPIC discussions

This can be a very confusing issue. You never know what's going to change. Since airlines started charging for checked luggage, the # of carry-ons must have increased. Three weeks ago we flew to Hawai`i. On two flights over Mrs.Wanda's carry on had to be gate checked. But the guitar and ukulele we were carrying went as carry ons. The guitar went into a closet and the uke in the overhead bin. On the 3rd flight, the guitar even went into the overhead. And this was no gig bag, but a large heavy plywood case. I expected to gate check it, but they never asked me to do so.But most larger carr on bags ended up gate checked. It may not be long until the rules for carry on luggage are rewriten.Paul

Carry on baggage/dulcimer and ND related

OFF TOPIC discussions

In July my husband and daughter took an overseas trip with just carryon luggage. One bag, under the seat size and one smaller than normalcarry on for the over head bin. When they got to the gate they foundout that they had to check the larger bags as the bins were alreadyfull on the Chicago to Philadelphia leg of the journey. Fortunatelywhen they switched planes in Philly they got to carry their luggage onfor the second leg of their journey. Airlines don't have to guaranteethat your carry on luggage will go carry on.

You can be the first one at the gate, but the order in which you get on as a passenger is set up by seating. So you can arrive early, be last boarded and find no room for your things.

So just to remindanyone who is planning a trip and perhaps thinking of carrying on adulcimer, you could be facing the same over stuffed bin situation. Besure your dulcimer is packed for check in, as even standard carry onluggage may end up in the belly of the plane.

Folks such as y'all here at FOTMD are what makes the dulcimer world a nice world in which to live! I feel lucky to have found the mountain dulcimer and the joy it brings.

Hello Larry! I entirely agree with your remarks, this site is indeed special, I have learnt a lot from it and only wish that the inspiration that conceived it had happened earlier, when I was doing a bit more 'making' and would have benifited from all the help that can be found here! I am not a great player, but have no problem 'showcasing' what I do here, warts and all, there has always been a word or two of encouragement forthcoming.Lets hope that this forum may long continue!Regards and thanks to ALL!JohnH

Having belonged to a couple of other web sites dedicated to the dulcimer, I can say that FOTMD and Everything Dulcimer are like family. No need for flame retardants or asbestos suits. Just good friendly helpful people. I really think there is something sort of magical about the dulcimer. It just brings out the best in people.

Geez, now you went and did it Lisa. You made my heart fluttered. I do not have a lot of musical info or talent as most people do here, i have learned that it doesn't matter your skill level because all are welcomed with open hearts. I've struggled on my journey and i have learned you go by your own pace. Being a member here has me striving to continue on the journey and we will see were we end up at.Thank-you all for being here.Bill

Just an appreciation hurrah to member Bill Lewis

Bill was the very 2nd person to join FOTMD on July 30, 2009 when FOTMD was just 1 day old.

I know that many of us look forward to his "Another Day in The Life of Bill" blog posts, describing his personal journey, struggles and successes as a beginner dulcimer player, or just everyday things.

But most importantly....
All on his own , Bill took it upon himself to post a friendly welcome message to literally hundreds of brand new members here, day in and day out, over the past year. Bill's little welcome messages make new members feel instantly at home and welcome into our friendly community of support.

Thank you Bill, for your kind spirit ...and thanks for just being Bill .

another century mark meet... less than 100 to go for 1000... guess since we didn't plan a party for 900, we'll have to plan a big party for the 1 year anniversary...

OK, I'm out of the loop. What is our "official" theme song??? Please don't tell me you all mean "Boil Em Cabbage Down". I don't know it. If it is, can I just play "Old Joe Clark" instead???? Phil Myers said:
I'll certainly be playing it!

Hey you guys are starting to embarrass me! (but thanks!)Remember, FOTMD stands for friends (plural) of the mountain dulcimer. It's not about me- this place would be pretty dull with just me here! We should all pat ourselves on the back for making this place special. It's so great to have this little shack where any of us can just stop in anytime, sit on the porch to cool our heels, swap stories, work out some tunes, show some snapshots, and cut ourselves a hunk o' 1 year anniversary pie in the kitchen...
