This piece (AKA Miss MacDermott) has been attributed Turlough O'Carolan. Its name is taken from the name of an English Country dance called the Princess Royal. Some say that it is because it was part of O'Carolan's repertoire that it has been mistaken as being his composition, while others insist that he composed it. I arranged this piece last week for fretted dulcimer and am playing it on an Aeolus Dulcimer built by Dale Foye ( www.aeolusmusic.com ).
Aw thank you Dusty! I'm using more marcato type articulation... that require damping the strings as I go.... a little different from how I usually play.
That's just delightful, Guy. I am so envious of the precision of your playing. I'm interested in those "new playing techniques" that you mention. But whatever they are, you should be happy with the result. This is excellent.
(The quality of your recordings also makes me feel so ashamed of my webcam videos!)
Thank you Rob! Yes, I'm in C-G-C for this one.
Really nice, Guy. I like that very much. Are you tuned down to C for this one?
Aw thank you so much Folkfan. That is so very kind of you to say!
That was so beautifully played, delightful is another word to describe you playing.
Hi Lesley! Welcome to FOTMD! Thank you so much for listening and taking time to comment! That's very kind of you. Yes, I think you are very wise to give yourself the gift of learning the dulcimer in the breaks you take while working on your dissertation etc! There are many wonderful players here and lots of great conversation. When you find some players who inspire you, you can also click on their picture in order to find their page. A ways down their page on the left you can find a link to all their videos (called "member's videos). There are a LOT of great videos here.
Aw thank you Patty. That's very kind of you!
Very lovely tune and excellent playing. Thank you for posting
Thank you so much Mary! You're right, I was experimenting with some new playing techniques so that I could highlight what I felt were important stylistic nuances to this piece. I'm not sure that I'm satisfied with the results. But then again, I'm rarely satisfied with anything that I play. LOL
Thank you so much, Steve! I'm so happy you liked it!
Guy this is so good. I don't know the tune but I really like it and i would agree with Benjamin's comments
Thank you so much Marion!
Thank you Brian... I hope I did it justice!!
I've always loved this tune. Very nice Guy!
Thank you Benjamin, I'm glad you liked it!!!
The tonal quality of that particular arrangement and this instrument sounds reminiscent of a medieval lute or a harpsichord. Nicely done.
Lol John! I'm so grateful everyone here is willing to listen to all my chording and fingerpicking! You're a very gracious bunch here on FOTMD!
Used to play this a lot on HD ! Never on MD. thanks for the memory Guy, very nice !
