I arranged this traditional Irish lament for fingerpicked fretted dulcimer. One version of this very sad song tells of a mermaid who falls in love with a mortal and marries him, thus losing her seal skin. When her children find her mermaid crown, the spell is broken, her seal skin returns and she must then return to the sea and leave her family behind forever.
Thank you so much, Ginney. I'm so happy you liked it!
It's a peaceful beautiful melody, skillfully played. Thanks.
Thank you so much Helen! It's such a pleasure to hear from you. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and to comment!
Thank you so much, James!
Guy, simply wonderful.
Thank you so much, Ken! It's not the same song, but the theme is not uncommon... the idea of a Selkie, or seal person losing their skin is one that is common in many stories....
That was just beautiful, Guy! Is this song related to one I use to know called "The Silkie of Sulskari" (I may have spelled it wrong). The song has the same sort of theme as this one.
Thank you so much, Jud. Yes, that movie has a fantastic soundtrack!
What loveliness! You probably know this already, but a version of the ballad story is told in the movie "Secret of Roan Inish," which has a great soundtrack.
Aw, thank you John and folkfan!!!
So softly sad. I had to go looking for the verses: As a mother, one verse where the sea maid is parting from her children in particular struck my heart and left me in tears. You did a beautiful job with this lament, thank you.
I am tired and will be forever,
My fair Mary and my blond Patrick.
On top of the waves and by the mouth of the sea,
Here's to you all, Mary Kenny to swim forever in the Erne.
Sigh, do you ever 'do' a bad 'un ?
John
Thank you Steve, Patty and Gary!
