This piece, from the Classical Period, was composed by Sor as a guitar etude and was realized for fingerpicked fretted dulcimer by Randy Wilkinson. Unfortunately no opus number was included, and I have not yet had the time to research it. I am playing a custom dulcimer built by Dale Foye of Aeolus Instruments.
Thank you so much, Geekling!!!
Thank you so much Helen!!
Thank you Dusty. Yes, it is rather whimsical!
That's very pretty playing, Guy. The piece has an almost whimsical quality.
Yes, Patty, 1-3-5 tuning is one of the "chromatic" tunings I mentioned. I look forward to a video of it from you!!!!
I found this on ED, http://www.everythingdulcimer.com/tab/SheepMaySafelyGraze.pdf . I'm also wondering if a 1 3 5 tuning would ensure getting all the notes? I understand that is the purpose of that tuning. At least that's what I read. Not sure. Yes, I do see an advantage to having a chromatic.
I've tried a few times to pick out Sheep May Safely Graze, and have always run into problems, I'm pretty sure from needng more chromatic notes. This is a problem with a lot of "classical" music.
Thank you Sean, Patty and John! Hope you do a video of your performance, Shawn! Patty, the problem you may run into on that Bach piece is the chromatic tones. You may either need to use a chromatic tuning, or a chromatic dulcimer to get all the notes you need.
Odd coincidence, we are just starting to work on a Sor Andante as well, but a different one - Opus 35 No. 1. The arrangement we're using is by Tull Glazener and has 3 parts. If we eventually get good enough I will try to record.
They do sound good on the dulcimer - nice job.
Excellent Guy!!! I've always wonder how classical pieces work on a dulcimer. Lately, I've been curious if Sheep May Safely Graze, J S Bach, works on a dulcimer (I've seen someone play it on violin)...my skills are no where near being able to that but was wondering if it was possible for that piece to be played on dulcimer and if someone has actually done that. You do a wonderful job. You really do!!!
That's really pretty. It fits the dulcimer well.
Thank you Brian. I agree that many lute pieces are excellent on Dulcimer.
Very nice Guy! Nina - also consider looking into the baroque and renaissance lute repertoire (from which much classical guitar comes also). Lots of great stuff there. Many Dowland pieces, for example, sound great on the dulcimer.
Thanks for the comment on my choice of music, Nina!
Great choice of music! I've often thought of looking into the classical guitar repertoire to arrange for fingerstyle dulcimer, but don't know it that well. Linda Brockinton does a great guitar piece, Opus 12 by Guilani (?) on one of her CDs, and I think she may have played it when she won at Winfield.
Thank you so much James!!
wonderful as ever Guy. Thank you for taking the time to make a video and share with us.
