Don, I just came home after a month on the road. Give me a day or two to put a micrometer on the strings as I can't remember what size I used. I'll get back to you with the full details.
Hey Ken, Hope you are doing well. I'm looking at photo of you holding a Scheitholt and was hoping you could tell me how many strings are on it, what size of strings, and how they are tuned please.

I have not tried audio recording before. I recently purchased a Tascam digital recorder. I will see if I can record something in the next week or two. I am away from home at the present time.

Hi, Virginia. The reproduction I made is not an exact replica of the scheitholt (A7 in L. Allen Smith's catalogue) of the instrument in the Mercer Museum. I made if from scrap wood I had in my shop and did not have quite enough wood to make it the proper depth. It is about an inch short of what it should be. A friend of mine traced the pattern from the original in the museum and let me trace his to make mine. The "frets" are wire bent into a U shape. The fret pattern is the same as a mountain dulcimer (no 6 1/2) fret. I tune it to DDAAA so it sounds very much like a dulcimer. If you ever want a reproduction of a scheitholt, Ben Seymour of Kudzu Patch makes them.
Wow...how great to have a copy of an original Scheitholt. I wish I could hear what it sounds like.
How much like a mountain dulcimer does it sound? Is the fret pattern similar? It sure looks like it from the photo. How were you able to get a reproduction made?

Hi, Charles,No I don't have plans for instrument. I could send you dimensions and I can make some drawings of the patterns I used. I think I saved them. I will just have to look around to see where I put them.

No, Dave, I did not use frets. That is brass wire which I bent around the end of lineman's pliers and then inserted through holes I drilled in the top and sides. It has five strings. Two are melody strings over the frets the other three are drones. It is tuned DDAAA.

Great looking Zitter Ken and it looks just like some of the ones I have seen in pictures! Did you use frets? How many strings and how does it sound?ThanksDave
No rush, Ken. Thanks for the reply Hope all is well. I'd like to start building them. Anything you wouldn't mind passing on would be appreciated.

Ken, that really is a beauty you made. Seriously.
I'd so love to hear/see you play it!
