That's really interesting(lovely playing also),the contours of the melody almost exactly match those of "The Huron carol",a Canadian standard.Perhaps not to be wondered at.Along with seamen, explorers, the Basques exported a lot of priests. The Hurons are an Iroquoian speaking people that used to live around the Shores of Georgian Bay in Ontario.
Great connection Davis! The Jesuit priest credited with writing the Huron carol (Jean de Brébeuf, 1593-1649) was born in Normandy and taught college in Rouen. It seems highly likely that he would at least have heard Gabriel's Message, and possibly have been quite familiar with the song. So although certainly not Basque, he would have undoubtedly been acquainted with Basque priests.

Lovely to hear this Basque carol, Mark. Thank you!
I'm glad you like it. There are so many wonderful folk carol melodies around the world, I love discovering and sharing them.
