"Elizabethan Garden" epinette des Vosges 6
(Gallery Description):
My custom epinette des Vosges, made for me in 2017 by luthier Muchael King of the UK. Kolrosing designs based on "blackwork" embroidery from the time of King Henry VII, Made entirely of European pear wood.
@irene , they are called quatrefoil ..meaning four leaves in French.
Although generally thought of as an early Christian symbol, particularly seen in architecture, the shape was used much earlier in other cultures as well.
here is a good page on the history and meanings of the shape:

Oh wow, I just realized that my first dulcimer has these sound holes on it. I surprised when I opened this box that came from a music store in Eli, Nevada that this dulcimer was made in Korea. (that was almost 40 years ago, I was weaving rugs at the time and traded two rugs for this first dulcimer) I thought the sound holes were rounded crosses. And this is your favorite sound holes. What are they called again? I'd like to learn more about these sound holes. aloha, irene
Just lovely!
