Jake was born in 1918. Karen and I pick him up from the assisted living facility to take to our dulcimer jams when we can. Jake said that when he was growing up he sang while chopping cotton or driving the plow with his mules.
Jake was in D-Day in WWII. In fact he had two brothers at D-Day, allĀ in different units, and they all survived not just the battleĀ but all three made it through to the end of the war.
Though he doesn't play dulcimer he's been a favorite at dulcimer festivals between Florida and Texas for years.
Jake must have hundreds of songs memorized. On the way home last night he told Karen & I when he was a kid a neighbor would buy a Jimmie Rogers or Carter record every week (he thought they were a dime) and he'd listen to each one a couple times and have it memorized.
Jake told us once he came in second at an international yodeling contest years ago.
That is so wonderful!
