Cynthia, I know it was not really my fault, for the ukulele was left on the floor in the living room while a toddler (me) toddled and a baby (my brother) crawled around. But I remember feeling horror when I stepped onto it.
Robin, I agree. Stories--like songs--are priceless.
Maybe someday I'll buy my mom a new Martin ukulele and assuage a half-century of guilt.

Dusty, that ukulele gave you all a memory and a story to tell for all these years. That's priceless, too!
My first thought seeing is was, "Oooh, too young, no." I know someone who put a uke in a crib with a baby, who learned to smash his first thing, then he did it AGAIN. We all know what happened right? However he repaired that uke, and it's too bad this one didn't get repaired, but seriously Dusty, at 18 months you were not the one responsible.
Hi Kristi. I only have a vague memory of stepping through the back of that ukulele, but I was probably not much older than I was in this picture. Still, my uncle, who gave the uke to my mom, has been reminding me of that mishap now for almost 50 years. So yes, I've survived to manhood but not without enough guilt to break a mule's back.

Thus, yet again performing a typical rock-star grandstanding move, way ahead of your time! LOL!

Aw shucks! The sad end of the story is that when I was a toddler I stepped right throught the back of that ukulele, crushing it beyond repair. At least it lasted long enough to engender in me a love of stringed instruments.

And you stepped through it? Yikes. Those were nice ukes and very much the rage to play. It is a wonder that you survived to manhood.
