This is one that I am working on. Nathan Hick's was a relative of Eli Presnel, and Leonard Glenn. I'm sure he got his pattern from the Presnell dulcimer.
I know several of these repro's may look alike. The reason for this is they evolved from the same pattern back in the 1880's. The original was C.N.Prichard whose dulcimer had its shape traced by Eli Presnell of NC. , and I'm sure it passed through the family to his great nephew Nathan Hick's. It is known that his gr.grandson Leonard Glenn made a pattern sometime in the 1950's, of which I have a copy of that pattern., and Leonard's son Clifford also worked from this pattern. A pure family tradition. Many folks and decedent's also produced instruments from this pattern. Each one changed, and added his own small changes. Each builder built the same but different instrument. I am going to try and putt together a picture of the four Dulcimers to show the differences.
Thanks John, nope no nails. This is not the same pattern as the ones he made for John Jacob Niles. This is probably his standard dulcimer, copied from his uncle Eli Presnell. I could see no nails in the only picture I could find of it.
Thanks Lexie, and to think that this pattern all started with a tracing that Eli Presnell made of a Prichard dulcimer. From the a family tradition was started . Eli Presnell, Nathan Hick's and Lenoard an Clifford Glenn. There were also others in the family that built one or two, and I understand there are still some in NC still making dulcimers.
Looks like some sort of beautiful glowing spirit dulcimer. Beautiful!
Thanks, Lisa. It does seem to glow.
