little gourd banjer
Photo Description:
Brian and I just finished drilling a sound hole into my small gourd banjer to open the sound up a bit- it worked very well! This little 8" diameter gourd was made by Jeff Menzies. The goatskin head surface is only 5 1/2" across. It has a gray formica fretboard overlay on a walnut neck.

What a beaut. Love to hear it if you get a chance to record it.
Dave,
This small gourd banjo was made by Jeff Menzies in 2005. Jeff said he made this one for himself, with the formica and fretless, and that Ray saw it, liked it, and got it from him not long after it was made. I don't think Ray played it a whole lot.
Jeff told me that back then he only put soundholes in about 50% of his gourd banjos, though now he always uses soundholes. I remember seeing various gourd banjos here and there about ten or twelve years ago (I got to see Mike Seeger playing a Bob Thornburg in one in his concerts), and I don't recall seeing soundholes in them, so I think it's become more standard nowadays than it used to be.
Wouldn't leaver 'er settin' on th' porch ... I know if I was a wren I'd move in there lickity split!
Thats cool looking I have a couple of gourd I am going to make into a gourd banger when I get the time.
