About 2 years ago I bought an instructional DVD from Stephen Seifert on how to play this 19th-century hymn. After a couple of weeks I had gotten about half way through the intermediate part of the lesson and gave up. Someday soon I'll go back and work on it some more, but this is what I have so far. The second verse strays a bit from Stephen's arrangement, but my fingers are not as nimble as his.I am playing a Modern Mountain Dulcimer made of lacewood and tuned DAd.Sorry about what appears as flickering lights. I don't know what's up with that. For Stephen Seifert: http://stephenseifert.com/
Thanks, Joann. Lacewood is a tonewood from Australia. According to mandolinluthier.com:
"Lace Wood (Cardwellia Sublimis) from
Australia, is a relatively new wood to be used by luthiers. It is a dense wood
with a loud, sustaining tap tone. Lacewoods color is a warm cinnamon brown and
has bold figure (the name leopard wood is sometimes used). Some builders feel
that this wood contributes to a warm tone characteristic of guitars many years
older."
Thanks, Mike. I don't think that Stephen has loaded this lesson onto the Dulcimer School yet. It is one of the DVD lessons that he did before there ever was a Dulcimer School. He's loaded few of those but not all of them. I would encourage you to request it of him. I asked for the Spanish Fandango lesson and within a week he put it up in the Dulcimer School.
Thank you so much, Mike and Helen. It may look "easy," but note that I started working on this song about two years ago and only recently felt good enough about it to post for public listening.
Hi Kristi and thanks for your comments. I'm so glad to know that the Youngster has an appreciative home. This MMD is certainly special, that's for sure. I feel like we are still getting to know each other.
You have a happy Thanksgiving, too.
Hey DT, I finally found this post & really enjoyed Angel Band. The new dulcimer sounds great & Youngster even approves. MMDs have their own characteristics & voices. Have a happy Thanksgiving with your family.
Thanks, Ed. Most of the ideas here belong to Stephen Seifert, asI say in the intro. But hopefully I stray enough from his tab to make at least part of this versionmy own.
Thanks, Karen. I just got this dulcimer a week or 10 days ago. We're on our honeymoon right now. Thanks for listening.
Loved the tone of that dulcimer and you played her well. Great job! Can't wait to see the rest!
Funny thing....I did PR work before I decided Nursing and Nurse Anesthesia was the career for me.
If you ever need PR person......I work for dulcimer accessories. :)
Adaptation does sound better. If I ever need a PR director, you're hired, Cheryl!
Dusty, its not cheating (that sounds like a bad thing!).....its simply musical adaptation. There...much nicer eh?
Gayle, don't get me wrong. I was happy enough with this to want to share it with people. But the second verse especially involves a lot of "cheating," like using open strings because I can't really get the right chord and stuff like that.
You are right that putting something on the back burner while you keep playing can reap great rewards. And it is a sign of progress when we come back to something we thought impossible and find we can play it OK.
Thanks for listening.
Thank you so much, Sue, Patty, and Strumelia. The feedback I'm getting today is really nice, especially since I had put this song away for so long thinking it wasn't working.
The visuals, dear Strumelia, are entirely accidental. There was no candlelight, though it does look that way. I was in front of a window with the sun shining outside. Something was going on with my webcam. The lacewood does have a textured look, though. And that flickering makes my shirt look pretty cool, huh?
Thanks, everyone.
Sounds real pretty the way you play it, Dusty.
And I like the visuals- the rich colors, the painterly texture, the flickering candlelight...
Dusty, that's great . I see what you mean about the flickering but the audio was just fine. I had some problems with YouTube today. I'm not sure what was up with that.
Rusty this is GREAT i love it'
John, RN and Brian, thanks for your comments. Brian, I would have liked to get the right hand in the frame but I also wanted to stay close enough to the mic. Obviously, my webcam has limitations.
Very nice Dusty! More right hand, please. :)
Like the tune, like the sound of the instrument, like the arrangement. I guess I like it all!
Thanks Dusty, its one I sing to when playing noter/drone, not a patch on yours tho'
