Larry, your playing is precise and playful at the same time, and it's clear that Elaine not only understands the dulcimer, but understands the way a bass is supposed to sound.  Her musicianship is understated but clearly on display here.  Thanks for sharing this duet.  I hope you guys are doing well.

Another of my favorite dulcimer duos is Steve Eulberg and Erin Mae when he plays his Galax dulcimer with a noter and she plays her chromatic.  No philosophical conflict there; tradition and modernity can thrive together musically!

Thanks for your comments Adrian.

I'm always amused when I read comments such as "traditionalists here may disapprove & say they are not "real" dulcimers because of the extra frets ..."  What if the player doesn't use those extra frets when performing a particular song such as "Cherokee Shuffle?"  Does the mere presence of those extra frets make the song non-traditional?  What if the traditionalist listened to the song on a recording with no visual reference at all?  Could he/she determine whether the instrument had extra frets?  Hmmmm.

I've always been of the opinion that, if the dulcimer is going to survive the next hundred years or so, it must evolve in various ways, just like the majority of our other musical instruments.  I'm sure that Les Paul was deemed to be non-traditional when he electrified the guitar.  However, I doubt those same people disapprove today.

I'm sure the same discussions took place when the piano evolved from the harpsichord and clavichord.
