Maryann, those are soundholes, many builders including myself under chamber the fingerboard and use holes to let the center fingerboard resonate. Its more common in Galex dulcimers. I like the look. Robin this is my first fiddle edge dulcimer, Im going to use it more often now that I found an easy way to build dulcimers this way... thanks for your kind comments... Bob
