Karen and I sincerely hope to see some FOTMD friends on the road this summer! We'll be in Benton, Arkansas June 2-4 for Arkladulcifest, Kentucky Music Week (Bardstown) the last week of June, Folkcraft Instruments in Woodburn, Indiana July 9 for the Second Saturday Workshop and concert, Evart, Michigan for the ODPC Funfest July 14-17, the Oaks of Louisiana in Shreveport July 29, the Homer Ledford Festival in Winchester, Kentucky over Labor Day weekend, back to Folkcraft in Indiana for the Indiana Dulcimer Festival September 17-18, and a few other festive places along the way. If you are in (or plan to be in) ANY of these areas at those times...let's hook up! We are performing and teaching at each of those events and we hope to see YOU there!

I met one of my NC neighbors, Gail Webber, at the Carolina Mountain Dulcimer Players workshops in Chapel Hill, NC yesterday. We were in 3 workshops together. I almost bought her McSpadden dulcimer, but one of my fellow Triangle Mountain Dulcimer Association members beat me to it! hi5

Hello

My name is Ann Wells and last year mid summer i was camping in Pictou, NS, Canada with my hubby.  A travel trailer pulled in across from us and later in the day, i could hear music coming from there, then fiddle music...well, I just had to go over to talk.  The lady was here with her hubby and another couple. We talked about her fiddle music, found she was a teacher of music in Vermont.  When I asked about the other instrument I had heard, she brought out her dulcimer and played a song...I immediately fell in love.  Turned out her hubby and lady friend also had dulcimer..I went back to our trailer and told my hubby that was what i wanted for my coming birthday.  He bought me a Cedar Creek, hour glass model and a book.  I tried to get the gest of it for a month or so.  Went on FOMD and asked if there was anyone in the Antigonish area who played, little knowing that I was the only one who owned one except for, as we later found out, a man about 200 miles away.  As a result of my inquiry, I was contacted by Jane Williams from Kentucky, who summers in Liscomb in Nova Scotia.  How blessed can you be?? Last Sept, just before they left to go home again, Jane and her hubby came for a visit. That's when I discovered that she teaches dulcimer to seniors at the college in Kentucky.  Don't think I didn't feel like dropping down and kissing her feet...and still do.  She is the most wonderful, gracious and talented friend who goes out of her way to help me out.  She has even come up to my area to play at the local nursing home with me. As a result of her teachings and patience, I have been playing at my church, nursing homes, library and for anyone who will listen. I do thank all the generous people who share their tab also but If there was an award for greatness, I would certainly nominate her.

Met David Pedersen on my trip hope to Oklahoma.  Played for 2 or 3 hours together.  Then, as has been said several times, Ken Backer and his wife, Lin, at Jim Fawcett's last night.  Great time on Jim and Bev's porch.

There are lots of folks that I've known from here as well as other events I've attended....it gets hard to keep it all straight after awhile.  But several great friends I definitly knew first as FOTMD people and then sought them out in the "real" world: Dana McCall (love ya, Dana!) who, it turns out, lives only 15 miles away!; Gail Webber who I first welcomed on this site and has since been my roommate at several workshops, retreats, and events; Rob Lackey, an interesting poster here and a really fun guy to jam with (met him at Dana's "Just Ain't Right" Jam a few years ago); and Mark Runge whose progress as a luthier I really admire and who, with his lovely wife Val, I have had fun exchanging visits with as we travel or attend events.  I had also read posts by Kristi Keller on here long before I met her and she became my "big sister" in Tucson, Arizona.

There are many more who I know I am going to meet someday!  Marg, bless her heart, offered me a place to stay when my brother was dying in a hospital near her home.  Although it didn't work out for me to do that, I'll never forget the offered gift of a room to a sad visitor to Texas!  Dulcimer friends are really the best!

Via FOMD last year I met Ann here in Nova Scotia where we have a cottage.  She was looking for people here who play.  As it turns out she lives in the town where we do our shopping, etc.  We stayed in touch over the winter, I helped her find songs, capo, her double bag from Lee Felt, etc.  Now we seem to be a "club" of two and are tabbing stuff, etc., and will play our second gig at her local nursing home this week.  Great fun - different tunes from my Kentucky club gigs.  Hard to keep up with her (she plays guitar, teaches Uke, sings and is getting a new Autoharp!).  I have met some treasured friends through the dulcimer world in Kentucky, but this new world has been just great as well!  And it has been fun to help someone who is so far from the "mainstream" dulcimer community!

It really is something of a surprise to me how many music friends I've met over the past several years, especially because I've never attended any of the big dulcimer fests. (When I joined Everything Dulcimer in '05, I'd not yet met any of the dulcimer friends I have now.) I feel rich, indeed.Smile.gif

Me, Robin!! You're forgetting me!!! Grin.gifGrin.gifGrin.gif

I had the wonderful privilege of meeting Robin at the PilotMountain Bowed Dulcimer Festival in April of 2012.A few months prior to that, Robin strongly encouraged me to apply for a scholarship that was beinggiven for thatfestival. I was hesitant at first, but I sure am glad Idecided to apply!!And I'm evenhappier that I won the scholarhip. Attending that festival and meeting Robin was one of the best weekends I've ever had. Being the "newbie" at the festival and knowing nothing about playing the bowed dulcimer, I was quite nervous when I arrived, but Robin instantly made me feel comfortable and introducedme toeverybody andI had a blast!

I hope this festival continues. I also had the opportunity to meet Jim and Bev Fawcett when they took vacation to visit Virginia. They are wonderful people. We spent time together touring Front Royal and we took pictures. I was the thorn between two roses, LOL. I was able to make it to the Wartz and All Gathering. I had the best time. I got to meet Rob Lackey, Liz, Scott Allen, Jim and Bev, Kevin Messenger and their families. They truly are the Friends of FOTMD. I got treated to a meal. Thanks Rob!!! Karen and I have met more FOTMD folks than we can count. Great folks one and all (even Rob Lackey lol), but there are two that I only got to say "hi" and "bye" to that I would love to visit with: Pop Miller and Leonard Griffin (both from Texas). Everyone else we've been able to visit with, go eat, take a class, or SOMETHING, but there was only time for introductions with those guys and I'd love to chat and get to know them a little better. Our FOTMD family is a treasure to us and we wouldn't trade these friendships for anything. Y'all are just some awesome rockin' people! Grin.gif

Yes I have. I met Sue Borchering this summer. She plays with PrairieLand Pickers. I began chatting with her here then when her group came to play at the assisted living center my grandchildren and I came to listen and meet her. What a joyful person. Her smiles are contagious. I'm blessed to have met her, her husband and the rest of the 'gang'.
