Rakes of Mallow

musician/member name: Dusty T
Duration: 00:02:32
description:
I play this traditional Irish reel on a dulcimer made of cherry and spruce by Rick Probst and tuned C#-G#-C#. This rendition is based on an arrangement by Steve Eulberg and available in his instructional book Another Jig Will Do.

John W. McKinstry: Wow! Now I know what finger dancing is all about. Thanks for sharing. John

Thanks for the comment, John. I'm certainly delighted to have my fingers described as dancing.  Sometimes they feel so fat and stubborn they're only good for playing a dirge.

Maria, I am not actually recording the audio on my Zoom H4N.  Instead, I am using it merely as the audio interface, so it is acting like a microphone for my computer.  I would like to make separate audio and video tracks and them mix them together but my engineering skills are limited in that regard.

Well it sounds great just the way you did it!!

Thanks, Marc. Yeah, this Probst dulcimer has a big sound and more sustain than any dulcimer I've ever heard.

Mary, your are right.  Any reel or jig  or slide that is intended to be danced to has to maintain a steady beat for the dancers.  Here is a demonstration: Rakes of Mallow dance .  People who play contra dances know how upset the dancers get if you vary the rhythm at all.

And yes, Steve Eulberg is a wonderfully knowledgeable, encouraging, and patient teacher.  I am lucky that he moved out to Northern California a couple of years ago and I get to work with him on a semi-regular basis.

Brian, Benjamin, and Terry, thanks so much for listening and offering encouragement.  It sure is fun to discover a "new" tune, even if it's hundreds of years old.

Dusty,

Great song, great playing, wonderfully toned dulcimer.

I agree with Mark, your play appears to be effortlessly.   From a helpless thumb player,  nice thumb work.

That was one of the first tunes I ever learned to play on hammered dulcimer, and one I haven't heard in a long time.  Thanks for sharing this. I enjoyed it.  :)

Thanks, Lexie.  I learned this song over the last week, but that means I've been playing it dozens of times every day. My wife and daughter are SO SICK of hearing this tune earplug  they've been begging me to work on a new one!

Fabulous playing Dusty. I like your description of the effort it takes to play this song.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Val, Mark, Maria, and Dale.  I appreciate your listening and taking the time to comment.

Mark, "effortless" actually takes some effort.  Notice that the song begins with 6 quarter notes and then 4 eighth notes and then repeats that pattern over the V chord.  When I first played it, I played the quarter notes over the V chord by lifting up my hand and playing them as individual notes on the melody string.  I think those notes came out more precise and clear that way. But there was a slight pause after the quarter notes as I lifted up my hand and moved it into place. So instead, I play those quarter notes with my thumb while my hand is still in a V chord position (1-2-1 or 1-0-1). The notes themselves are slightly less clear, but the rhythm is steadier.

Maria, I am not actually recording the audio on my Zoom H4N.  Instead, I am using it merely as the audio interface, so it is acting like a microphone for my computer.  I would like to make separate audio and video tracks and them mix them together but my engineering skills are limited in that regard.

Nice job Dusty

I really like that playing and the sound of that dulcimer!
It's very unusual looking!!

Also how do you do this? you film with a camera and then add the audio from the zoom recorder? just curious how everyone does their videos!!

thanks for sharing

Maria
