Remember the games we'd play, catching leaves as they fell on those windy fall days? I wrote this tune yesterday after getting plunked on the head by an acorn, and am playing it on a baritone dulcimette made by Ron Ewing of walnut and red cedar and tuned G#D#g#.
Thanks, @davisjames. I think I later wrote a slow intro to this tune, but I haven't played it in a while. Gotta get reacquainted with my own compositions!
That is some ticklish tune[that's praise...tickles my ears]...
Thanks, Sam. I tend to play fast, rhythmic tunes on this little dulcimer since the frets are so close together, making fast playing easier, and it has so little sustain.
Happy tune, had my toe tappin' all the way through!
Thanks, Christine. Indeed, I'd gladly get plunked by an acorn anytime if I could get a song out of it!
Oh yes - that sounds like it exactly! Great job, Dusty! Also, I know what you mean about the acorns. Sometimes I think they just wait for us to be in the right position, then wham! But on the bright side, it brought you a new song. Well worth getting plunked, right?
Thanks for commenting, Patty. I gew up in New England, where the height of color is roughly mid-October. I am not surprised leaves turn a bit later down in Virginia. But here in drought-ridden California, leaves on some trees started turning very early this year, stirring my memories of childhood.
THere is no written version of this song yet, but I'll get it tabbed out at some point, I'm sure. Thanks again.
I love this. Our leaves are starting to fall especially with all the wind we've had the last couple of days. They haven't quite turned color but they're falling, lol. I hope you wrote this song down on computer/paper. It's definitely a keeper! You did a great job. Nice tune to start my morning. Thanks Dusty!
Terry, John, and Charles, thatnks so much for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it.
Dusty, LOVED it!! I miss jumping into a huge pile of leaves. I still remember the smell!
Nice work, Dusty!
You sure get some pretty music out of your little dulcimer. Enjoyed it very much.
Thanks, Bob.
When came up with the melody I immediately recorded it on my phone. I guess I didn't trust it to stick in my head.
Good stuff Dusty. It sticks in my head.
Thanks so much, Robin, Ginney, and Lexie.
Lexie, we usually make some big piles, too, and my daughter runs through them. Our dog, however, thinks we're nuts and just watches, wondering what in the world we're doing. Either that or he's actually afraid of the leaves, which is a possibility, as crazy as it sounds.
Fun song and image of catching leaves as they fall. I myself love raking them into a pile and running through them with my Smiley Dog, he hides in them.
Really like your melody Dusty.
I enjoyed that one Dusty.
I'm glad the Turtle poked his head out of the shell! :) Way cool, Dusty!
Alan, Robin, and Val, thanks so much for your encouragement.
Robin, the dulcimer has three extra frets in the first octave (.5, 1.5, and 6.5) but none in the second octave, where the spaces are so small extra frets would lose their utility. I have to admit that I never use the .5 fret, but since you never really fret down there anyway, it doesn't get into the way.
Lively composition Dusty, and very well played.
