Kevin, that is kinda how Homer Ledford fit his sides. And he did not form his sides first. He fit them between the top and back but worked them inside so you have the violin edge. And he used no internal bracing, so there is nothing inside to interfere with the sound waves.
Ken , He just cut two straight slots parallel to the side of the block, instead of a dovetail or angled mortise. The side were glued only on the outside edge, not to the inside of the side. Hope that makes sense.

I forgot to say ,yes there are 5 back braces . They are each about 5/16ths square.
I thought that was a little strange too, since he used a one piece back.
